The latest from Burger King is another one of their “going back to the well” offerings.  New to the menu is the Teriyaki Original Chicken Sandwich and it’s a head-scratcher to me because the Original Chicken Sandwich was never impressive enough to me to be a reliable source of future creations.

Burger King Teriyaki 1Burger King describes their new Teriyaki Original Chicken Sandwich like this:

Our Teriyaki Original Chicken Sandwich is a crispy breaded white meat chicken fillet topped with a sweet and savory teriyaki sauce with a hint of ginger, ripe tomatoes, chopped lettuce, and creamy mayonnaise all on a toasted hoagie sesame seed bun.

The new sandwich is a part of the 2 for $5 Mix & Match deal which also includes the Original Chicken Sandwich, Big King, and Big Fish Sandwich.  Priced alone, the Teriyaki Original Chicken Sandwich was a staggering $4.69.

BK Teriyaki 2If you’re familiar with the Original Chicken Sandwich from Burger King, you’ll be very familiar with the new Teriyaki version.  The only difference between the two is the added teriyaki sauce which is described as “sweet and savory with a hint of ginger”.  Sweet and savory with a hint of ginger is probably an OK way of describing typical teriyaki sauce.  For this BK version, I had trouble identifying much sweetness and got more of an overwhelming soy sauce flavor.  There wasn’t enough of the teriyaki sauce to be able to really define the sandwich from a taste perspective.  BK Teriyaki 3The taste is really mostly coming from the greasy pressed chicken product known as the “crispy breaded white meat chicken fillet.”  Some will scoff about keeping the mayo on the sandwich even though there’s teriyaki sauce on it, but I didn’t find it to not be an issue.  If anything, the mayo was a plus since it helped cut the foul, oily flavor from the chicken patty.  There’s some chopped lettuce and two small slices of tomato that again, work to help dull the offputting flavor of the chicken.BK Teriyaki 4I always remember this chicken for being incredibly salty, but wow… please discontinue this so-called chicken BK… this thing is flawed. The toasted hoagie sesame seed bun was one of the minor highlights in the sandwich and that’s pretty sad. BK Teriyaki 5The new Teriyaki Original Chicken Sandwich is best summed up by the initial thought from GrubGrade reader JJ who said, “They should have offered this as a Tendergrill, and thrown a pineapple slice on there. I’m not sure what the point of continuing to offer the original chicken sandwich is.”  I couldn’t have said it better myself.  Save your money.
